On The Watch “It’s All About Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai”

Flyweight Showdown

Tonight’s Matchroom/DAZN Main Event between former IBF World Flyweight Champion “Showtime” Sunny Edwards (21-2, 4 Kos) and WBC International Champion Galal Yafai (9-0, 7 kos) definitely shocked the viewers at home and the fans in attendance by the surprising outcome of this bout at The Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England.

I personally never anticipated this outcome but tonight I witnessed a one-sided beatdown being handed out by Yafai that clearly had Sunny contemplating life inside that squared circle. Yafai had that pressure style with his hands going from head to body right from the gate that didn’t let Sunny get any breathing room at any moment throughout the duration of the bout.

Sunny looked disengaged from round one and unprepared to handle the nonstop pressure that was coming at him which was quite surprising since Sunny had seen and dealt with many different styles prior to this bout but for some reason could not deal with what was coming at him on this particular night.

Sunny had always been known for his speed and exceptional defence but tonight, neither were on point. Sunny was getting touched up from left to right, head to body, consistently being manhandled while retreating on the ropes.

Yafai looked like a man possessed and determined to come out on top. Yafai’s nonstop unanswered onslaught and bullish ways towards Sunny in the sixth round prompted the referee to stop the fight to prevent Sunny from taking any further unnecessary abuse. This version of Sunny inside that squared circle tonight stood no chance at turning the fight into his favor.

With this very convincing win now under his belt, Galal picked up the Vacant WBC Interim World Flyweight Championship Title, positioning himself next in line at a chance at the full WBC Flyweight Title.

Congratulations Galal, you’ve officially announced yourself to the Flyweight Division. Well Done!

On The Watch “It’s All About Jesse Rodriguez vs Sunny Edwards”

IBF/WBO Flyweight Unification Championship

Last night’s Matchroom/DAZN Main Event between WBO Flyweight Champion Jesse Rodriguez (19-0, 12 Kos) and IBF Flyweight Champion Sunny Edwards (20-1, 4 Kos) definitely brought the house down at the Desert Diamond Arena. Real Talk!

Both undefeated Champions walked into that squared circle to determine who was the No. 1 Flyweight in the Division and what transpired subsequently was quite surprising. The usual untouchable slick-talking, slick-moving “Showtime” Sunny Edwards found out quite quickly that “Bam” Rodriguez was the real deal inside that squared circle.

The pressure and patience that Jesse was coming in with was serious and he walked it like he talked it when he was putting some heavy leather on Sunny right from the jump. Sunny wasn’t used to getting touched up like this and hurt at the same time and as the rounds progressed, you could visibly see the damage that Jesse was doing by the way Sunny’s face was being marked up.

Sunny had absolutely no answer or the right “game plan” to deter Jesse from having his way inside that squared circle. Round by round you could see Jesse gaining more and more confidence while not respecting his opponent by the way he was pressuring Sunny at every corner of the ring.

Truth be told, it was a one-sided beat down that nobody expected. The inevitable was nearby. The brash talking “showtime” Sunny’s light was looking dimmer and dimmer as the rounds progressed and he looked like a defeated man ready to be put down. Jesse obliged in the ninth round and dropped Sunny with a vicious knockdown in the closing round prompting a corner stoppage in between rounds 9 and 10.

With this emphatic win now under his belt, Jesse has now put to bed the debate on who is unquestionably the No. 1 Flyweight champion in the Division by picking up the IBF World Championship Belt and unifying it with his WBO World Championship Title.

Well done “Bam” you’ve earned all the respect the hard way. Congratulations on your latest conquest.

On The Watch “It’s All About Jesse Rodriguez vs Christian Gonzalez”

Vacant WBO Flyweight Championship

Last night’s Matchroom/DAZN Main Event between Jesse Rodriguez (18-0, 11 Kos) and Christian Gonzalez (15-2, 5 Kos) was a very entertaining bout for all the fans in attendance at Tech Port’s Boeing Center in San Antonio.

Both combatants threw some serious leather at each other making this bout that much more intriguing but it was Rodriguez who separated himself by showing a level of boxing IQ above his opponent that couldn’t go unnoticed. The kid “BAM” is something special inside that squared circle. For a young kid, his skill set inside that squared circle was visibly growing fight by fight.

Although Jesse did not get the stoppage in this bout, he clearly dominated his opponent who realized he was severely outmatched inside that squared circle and did whatever was needed to survive the duration of the bout. Gonzalez started the bout with a good “game plan” but quickly abandoned it when the pressure was too overwhelming to overcome.

After 12 fully completed rounds, the Judges at hand had no problem calling the bout 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 unanimously for Jesse Rodriguez.

With this convincing win, Jesse “BAM” Rodriguez picked up the vacant WBO Flyweight Championship Belt of the World and became boxing’s youngest Two-Division World Title holder.

Quite an impressive accolade for the young warrior. Well done, Champ.
